this piece was a part of my most recent solo exhibition at LEDA gallery, November 2024 titled MEANDER

Annalisa Lawrence also known as SALTWATER WOMAN, distills the energy of her surroundings into a visual language. Meander, her latest series, is rooted in the ancient motif of the same name—a symbol that has endured through cultures and time. It’s found in ancient Roman architecture, contemporary fashion, and timeless surf culture.

Named after the Meander River in Turkey, the pattern represents a winding path, one that is indirect yet purposeful, much like life itself. The meander’s wave-like form embodies continuity and flow, but its deeper resonance lies in what it symbolises— the complex, unpredictable course of the human experience.

It’s a reflection of how we navigate life’s turns, its moments of resistance and release. Water, in particular the sea, serves as the unseen force in my work, a constant presence that shapes both subject and setting. Symbols like umbrellas, yachts, and palms—often associated with escape—are animated by water, the source that connects them all. Saltwater Woman's figures, caught in candid moments of solitude, represent more than their individual presence. In choosing peace and self-care, they contribute to a larger, shared sense of calm—a subtle nod to the collective influence of personal choices.

This work challenges the viewer to look beyond what is immediately visible. What do we notice, and what escapes our attention? What is taken for granted, existing just out of reach? What is absent yet undeniably felt? Meander contemplates the cycles that define our existence —those we observe and those we only sense. It asks us to reflect on how we engage with the forces that shape our lives. Are we moving with intent, or simply being carried by the current? It is a call to deepen awareness—to recognise what truly surrounds us and to question what we overlook.
